For decades, it has been assumed that there is a strong correlation between a loss of physical and psychological function after a serious brain injury. Now, new research from Germany suggests that it isn’t as closely related to brain structure injuries as first thought. This news could give hope to thousands of brain injury victims who assumed that their injury would mean a lifetime of debilitation and therapy.

The research was carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Cognition and Neuro Sciences, and was led by Drs Rainer Scheid and D. Yves von Cramon. By very traumatic I mean multiple brain contusions, skull fractures, broken bones in my ear, and double vision. Do you think it will hinder my recovery? The doctor said don’t do any drugs, but you would think that every doctor would tell you NOT to do drugs… Right?

In 2005 I suffered a traumatic brain injury from a serious auto accident and I had a lot of balance problems, including some vestibular issues. That has since been resolved, and my everyday balance is fine. However, I used to do a lot of swing and ballroom dancing, and when I tried a simple dance recently, I felt very imbalanced. Any unusual motion of my head causes me to feel unsteady (I am a school teacher and looking up and down from my notes to the chalkboard is difficult). Will my balance EVER return, or should I get used to using the overhead projector at school and not dancing anymore?
